Exploring Tongbok Market in Pyeongtaek

It’s a three-posts-in-a-week kind of week (as I’ll have another post coming out on Friday) since I’m currently 16 posts behind on all of our wanderings. I have a feeling that even after we get to Missouri, I’ll STILL be posting about things we did in Korea. And you know what? I’m not even mad about it. Today’s post isn’t among the most exciting, but I realized that I never even posted about Tongbok Market.

Tongbok Market in Pyeongtaek

Tongbok Market is a traditional market (much like Gwangjang Market in Seoul, but on a MUCH smaller scale) that is only about a 15-20 minute drive away from Camp Humphreys. They offer a variety of goods like fresh produce, seafood, Korean street food (including some DELICOUS hotteok that rivals even that of my favorite hotteok lady at the 3/8 Market), clothing, jewelry, and really anything else that you might expect from a market. The prices were reasonable (especially for produce) and we found some really cute clothes and hairclips as well.

Tongbok Market runs every day, making it more convenient than the 3/8 Market just outside of Camp Humphreys. It’s a great way to get a taste of Korea – whether you’re trying out some traditional foods or just basking in the atmosphere. If you find yourself with some time to kill and a grocery list, head on over to Tongbok Market and have a look!

’til next time…

How to visit Tongbok Market in Pyeongtaek

Directions & Parking: One of the great things about Tongbok Market is that there is an entire public parking lot dedicated just to that. You can use this link to get to the Tongbok Market public parking lot or paste 경기 평택시 통복시장로 23 into Naver. I recommend getting to Tongbok Market early because the lot isn’t huge and does fill up fast. Parking was cheap and only cost us about ₩2,000 for a few hours.
