It’s my first post about our first real adventure here in Missouri. Yes, I still have some more Korea posts to do, but for one reason or another, I’ve been kind of putting them off. Maybe it’s because the longer we’ve been away from South Korea, the more it feels like it was all a random dream. Even so, I’ve still got those coming eventually. In the meantime, let me take the opportunity to share with you all one of the more random things we’ve ever visited: Uranus Fudge Factory. Yes, you read that right. And, yes, they really play on the “butt” jokes throughout. I’ll share all about our experience, as well as a little caution and disclaimer at the end for anybody wanting to visit.
Our visit to Uranus Fudge Factory
Uranus Fudge Factory boasts a number of attractions for visitors including the World’s Largest Belt Buckle (which, if that doesn’t SCREAM Missouri – then I don’t know what does), a sideshow museum (admission fee required), an outdoor playground, and a general store where you can sample and purchase MANY different flavors of really out-of-this-world fudge (no pun intended). And then, of course, there are plenty of really weird and random photo spots like the little gem below – because who doesn’t want their face sticking out of a bunch of animals’ rear-ends?
Random (and at times uncomfortably inappropriate) as it was, we did have a good time. Our favorite thing BY FAR was the sideshow museum where we got to walk straight into the world of P.T. Barnum. They had displays of different things that he had in his shows – as well as other things you’d expect from sideshows, like a tattooed woman who performed slight-of-hand tricks and did a whole sword-swallowing show. The kids loved the LIVING two-headed turtle, as well as the variety of interesting animals that were deceased and preserved in jars around the museum. Did it feel like something straight out of a horror movie? Absolutely. Was it interesting/educational/enjoyable? It sure was!
After the sideshow museum, we headed over to the general store where we found a magnet for our souvenir magnet board. Then OF COURSE, we headed to the fudge counter and spent way too much money on a variety of fudge (that we are STILL working our way through). So Uranus Fudge Factory is definitely more than just an incredibly immaturely-named tourist destination. And look – I’m not judging. I can be plenty immature and can fully acknowledge that poop and butt jokes certainly have their place. That being said, even my husband and I by the end were a little done with all the “fudge packer” jokes – among other even more inappropriate jokes (if you can imagine that).
So would we go back? Probably not – unless we have visitors who are really in the mood for some crude humor. Still, the kids enjoyed themselves (and we were grateful that most of the jokes went RIGHT over their heads) and it felt good to start getting back into the groove of exploring and learning to love where we live.
’til next time…
Ash
Things to know before visiting the Uranus Fudge Factory
Visiting with children and teens: You know with a place with a name like Uranus Fudge Factory, you’re going to be experiencing a plethora of crude jokes. That being said, the jokes were far more inappropriate than we had expected. Our kids are all young enough that they didn’t seem to understand some of the more crass jokes, but it’s something to be aware of – especially if you’re planning to visit with older kids or teenagers.
